This course is ideal for physicians, PA’s, sonographers, and all other allied health professionals:
  • wishing to extend their clinical capabilities to include musculoskeletal sonography
  • physicians, including but not limited to: orthopedists, sports medicine, physical medicine & rehabilitation, rheumatology, podiatry, athletic training, emergency medicine, radiology, podiatry, chiropractic medicine, internal medicine and primary care
  • wishing to increase their knowledge of MSK ultrasound
  • physicians seeking 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™
  • sonographers requiring SMDS Continuing Medical Eduation credits


Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
  • identify normal anatomy during musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging
  • recognize ultrasound characteristics of commonly seen pathology of the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist hand, ankle, foot, and hip
  • better understand the indications, benefits, and limitations of MSK ultrasound for sports medicine injuries, physical medicine & rehabilitation, and rheumatology applications
  • demonstrate proper transducer manipulation and system optimization to produce diagnostic images
  • successfully challenge the ARDMS Registered Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSKS & RMSK) Certification Exams

Brian Tollefson, MD, RMSK, RDMS, FACEP, CAQ Sports Medicine
University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi

Dr. Tollefson, MD specializes in Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine. He lectures regularly on both musculoskeletal ultrasound and emergency medicine. Annually, he conducts a comprehensive didactic and hands-on musculoskeletal ultrasound course that is attended by residents, fellows and attending physicians from emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, rheumatology, sports medicine and family medicine. His relaxed educational style is highly regarded and provides a comfortable classroom environment.

Dr. Tollefson has a unique practice at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is the Director of Emergency Ultrasound Education for a residency program consisting of nearly 40 residents. He also holds a faculty position with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery where he has a busy Primary Care Sports Medicine practice and is the co-Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. In his sports medicine clinic, Dr. Tollefson uses ultrasound extensively for diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries in athletes of all ages.

Dr. Tollefson holds RMSK and RDMS (abdomen) credentials. He was among the first to successfully pass the new ARDMS exam earning Pioneer RMSK distinction.

Dr. Tollefson has an array of diverse interests. He is currently a flight surgeon and Medical Group Commander in the Mississippi Air National Guard. Previously he was on active duty in the Air Force and was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In his spare time, Dr. Tollefson competes in triathlons and is currently building an experimental airplane.

With his clinical skills and his broad experience in ultrasound education,
Dr. Tollefson is exceptionally qualified to teach the new review course in musculoskeletal ultrasound. We are proud that Dr. Tollefson has joined the ESP team.
